Plano Bump Board (Fish Measure)
« on: February 21, 2011, 10:56:28 AM »
Picked up one of these at Walmart on Saturday.
Wasnt pricy at all $10 plus tax.
Small enough for a Kayak, feels pretty sturdy for measuring fish.
It's extendable for those potential monsters.
One thing i like about this is there are are options to teather this to your Kayak.
the one end of it actually has styrofoam in it too, so that gives it some floating ability (although not tested).

If we are looking to standardize our 2011 AOTY measurements, perhaps this can be looked at.

I looked at this one myself and the idea is great, however...

You will want to go over the lines with the edge of a black permanent marker to ensure that they are clearly visible in photos. Depending on light angle, brightness, clarity of image etc.

The one reason I don't know if this is a good tourney board is that you can get intentionally (or accidentally) longer measurements if you fail to pull the extension out all the way. If you pull it out but are an inch short of having it completely extended, your fish can appear as though it's an inch longer. The middle could be obscured and there could be controversy over the measurement.

I'm am not saying anyone is going to do this but it's good to have all the question removed. When a 1/4" could mean the difference between placements, this could be a source of contention.

Perhaps if the area of the junction was clearly in the photo it would be enough to confirm this. I'm not sure but usually official devices have all of these possiblities removed from the design. Hate to be a downer about this.

thats not being a downer, its being logical... its nothing i thought of...
I hope most people on here would be a part of the honour system of sort, and wouldnt resort to cheating for a few measly prizes or being 1st, 2nd, 3rd.

my thought behind all this was to find something standarized that everyone can get a hold of, thats not too expensive, and easy to use.

after looking at it further, i see what you mean by being able to manipulate your measurements.  we could also reverse the numbers using a black sharpie or something so that way you cant really cheat (mark 36 as 19 and move backwards).

Well as far as function it looks great.

My Hawg Trough (Canadian version) had to be marked on the lines so it would stand a hope in hell of being seen in a photo and I'm also having to put in two wooden dowels on either underside to add rigidity and buoyancy. When you add the cost of having it shipped along with all the extra fuss, it was ridiculous really.

Hey everyone.  I don't post for months and now I am on a tare.  :)  I still have not made or purchased a measure board but I need to do so now since I am wanting to sign up for AOTY finally.  A couple questions:

1.  Can I make my own out of PVC pipe, etc. and put my own measurements via a Rapala sticker like I have on my paddle?  Is this tourney worthy/acceptable?

2.  If I need to buy one then what is the best one out there?

John, I bought one of those last year and it works great. The black marker does make it stand out and if you use it in a tournament and you have the fish completely in the picture, I'm not so sure you can actually throw the measurement off, but I'll have to dig mine out to check.  I'm surprised that other people haven't seen them around because the Walmarts were full of them all last summer. ;)

I am making a few up... gonna use white pvc with a cap on one end to but the nose up to and two measurements.. one side will be in inches the other will be in cm... gonna make a leash for it and was thinking of a way to make a cradle for it for handsfree use...will let you know how it turns out

Last year I picked up a folding Rapala ruler (the 150cm model). The numbers are really easy to read, but: it is flat so the fish thrash around a lot, and, there is a joint at the 50cm mark and on my deck that tends to drop down and folds the ruler which shorts me on the measurements. You can see that in the middle of the photo (from last year's EKFC). I can overcome this by having something underneath the ruler to keep it flat, but I think I am going to make a trough out of PVC pipe and put in an adhesive ruler

I know I've posted this before but this is what I made for last years tourney and worked really well.Easy to build (just some 4'' PVC ,a cap and a fish measure ticker)and if you added a leash no issues with losing it.The only downfall I found was it's size.
