Planning on picking up my Coosa tomorrow and I'm renting a car to drive it from Ottawa to the Kawarthas. I think I'm going to use these, which Ottawa Paddle Shack carries:

HandiRack - The World's First Inflatable Roof Rack

But I am kind of stressed out about the whole rental car/inflatable rack thing.

D, the only thing I can give in advise is strap it down tight, you don't want them slipping about at all and scratching the roof of the hire car.
Some people love them over here but others hate them, the main complaint seems to be from the Sea going boys who complained about sand getting under them and scratching the roof

So yeah, those inflatible racks DID scratch the rental car. I put some "scratch remover" wax stuff on but you can still see the marks. Still waiting to see if they charge me anything...I did buy all the insurance though but we'll see. I have some pics I'll put up later.

I am disappointed to hear they scratched the car. I am also looking for a cheap way to haul a yak on the roof without getting into a proper rack. I have seen some foam type blocks that people use, anyone have the same scratching problem?

Sports Racks are garbage. I returned them and today I spent 700$ on Yakima Roof Rack I installed it on my little car and I'll show you pictures tomorrow. Very professional kit, costs allot but just you wait till you see my kayak on it sticking out a foot and a half on both sides lol. I am very happy with it.! Also bought some scuppers plugs and a paddle. waiting for my pfd on order.

new guy on an old post , A little known fact of late 90's Tercels is that you can use an old school rain-gutter mounted rack AND it will extended/attach above the non-opening rear window giving you the largest bar spread possible. Racks are always Superior  to foam blocks for a secure load.

P.S. on my 1991 4dr Tercel I've had 5 sea kayaks & the most weight I carried was 2 Wilderness Systems Pamlico 160's & 2 Wilderness Systems Pamlico 135's at once.
Boats:
Wavesport Ace4.7
Wavesport ZG 48
Dagger Atom
Wilderness Systems Shaman
Wilderness Systems Alamax
Perception Prodigy 10
Point 65 Sea Cruiser
Liquid Logic CR80
Liquid Logic Trigger
Liquid Logic Lil'Joe
Liquid Logic Hoss

When is it too cold to paddle?

just to add in the el cheapo addition. I find the frontier racks from Cdn Tire to be excellent. maybe just a tercel thing??
I have a Chevy Aveo and they give good amount of spread and they are solid as a rock. Cost me 1/4 what a thule would and do the same job just as well. Once installed a rack is a rack is a rack. 2 cross bars.
the Thule outfit for my car was 600+ and the frontier was 179....no brainer
